Barva, Costa Rica (Feb 2026) - Service Trip Recap

Location: Barva, Costa Rica
This is our second Biola University & Friends service trip to Costa Rica, where the team partnered with Roblealto to serve the kids and community at their Bible Home. They spent time painting the school and connecting with children and staff, sharing meaningful moments along the way. From service projects to laughter and cultural experiences, the team built lasting memories in this beautiful country.

Day 1
Our team arrived in Costa Rica early in the morning and headed straight to the Roblealto Bible Home. After settling in, we shared breakfast together and took a tour of the Bible Home to learn more about the community we’ll be serving. ✈️🇨🇷
Following some rest and lunch, we went on a river hike that gave us time to connect and bond as a team. 🙌
Later in the afternoon, we held our HFK orientation and unpacked the donation bags we brought with us. 📚🧳
We ended the day playing outside with the kids before heading to dinner at Daisy’s, HFK’s Global Ambassador. The night wrapped up with good food and a few competitive rounds of Spot It! 💙
Day 2
The team took an excursion to La Paz Waterfall Gardens Nature Park. We got to see a ton of amazing wildlife, waterfalls, and experience Costa Rica’s natural beauty! 🦥🇨🇷
We then got to explore downtown San José and made a stop for ice cream. Once the team arrived back at the house, we brought out the guitar and sang worship songs together before finishing the night with some fresh granadilla fruit. 🍦✨
Day 3
The team started our service projects for the week! We worked on repainting one of the Bible home houses and also helped unload supplies that we will be using to help fix a water tank later in the week - weather permitting, of course! 🙌
We then got to help teach kids guitar during a workshop and joined in on a game of volleyball with the kids during sunset. 🎶🫶
Our team finished the night having dinner with the kids and their house parents in their homes and also got to do some activities with them! 🍽️💙
Day 4
The team continued one of our projects for the week, which is repainting one of the houses. During our lunch break, we got to play a volleyball game together! 🎨🏐
Once the kids finished school, some of the team members joined in on a game of soccer. We had a worship night where the team got to play music, sing, and dance with all of the kids in the Bible home as well as the house parents! ⚽️🎶
The kids also had the opportunity to answer some questions about HFK and the team members to win some prizes! 🏆
Day 5
The team continued our service project of painting one of the houses at Roblealto and made some big progress! 🙌
The girls got to have some bonding time with the moms of the Bible home and baked cookies. 🍪
Some of the team were then able to play a game of soccer with the kids once they finished school. Afterwards, we went to our assigned houses and got to spend more time with the kids and house parents in their homes. ⚽️💙
We finished the night practicing worship for devotional the next morning! 🎶
Day 6
The team got to help with worship during the Roblealto staff’s devotional this morning. 🎶
We then got to pass out some homemade cookies made by the girls to the staff and teachers! We also got to take a tour of the school to see where the kids do all their studies! 🍪📚
Our group continued making big progress on our work project and in the afternoon we got to help the kids with some soccer drills out on the field. Finally, we ended the day with a walk around the Roblealto facility! 🙌⚽️
Day 7
The team finished our project for the week! Some of the team got to help build a robotics kit for the kids and also got to participate in a volleyball workshop. 🙌🏐
In the afternoon we played a soccer game with a mix of the kids and staff of Roblealto and then a second game with the team vs. just the adults. ⚽️
To end the night, we were able to play a sunset game of volleyball as a team and then finished with dinner at the kids houses one last time! 🍽️💙
Day 8
This was our last day. We started out the day with a morning devotional together and then went to one of the houses to have homemade arepas for breakfast with one of the house parents and the kids! 🍽️
We joined the children on a hike to a river! After that the team had a little carnival for the kids with soccer, basketball, volleyball, and water balloons! ⚽️🏀🏐
After saying goodbye to the children, our group had one last dinner together at a local restaurant and ended the night with some ice cream! 🫶

Our team had a great time partnering with Roblealto on this recent trip to Costa Rica! Together with their staff, the group helped paint a local school, creating a brighter space for students to learn and grow. It was an honor to serve this wonderful community.
